The history of Mother's Day

Memorable Gifts for Every Mom

Did you know that Mother's Day started with the concept of a Mothering Cake! During the 1600’s England, that is what mothers received for “Mothering Sunday” held on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter). To this day, in England, Mother's Day is held in early March. I wonder if it is more commonly referred to it as Mummy's Day?

So, whey do we and most other countries celebrating Mother's Day on the 2nd Sunday in May? It has to do with a woman named Ana Jarvis. In 1907, she began a campaign to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest and by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

Mothers in Canada, US, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, this year, it will be May 13th.

There you go, Mother's Day is an excellent time to have cake (don't forget to eat it too!).

Happy Mother's Day!

Smilebox custom photo ecards for Spring & Easter

I'm loving the new Smilebox customizable photo ecard service (and it's free!)... they have a beautiful design with Cherry Blossoms that really epitomizes Spring. I put a picture of my niece posing with a great umbrella from the Umbrella Shop and the image works great with the ecard as it features falling cherry blossoms! And it is one of Smilebox's free designs! Did I mention it comes with music too... and it's free!

I can't wait to try out Smilebox's free scrapbooking and slideshow service too!

Happy Spring & Easter!!!

p.s. did you know that besides Vancouver, BC there are other great cities with Cherry Blossom Festivals. They are:

Washington, DC
Macon, Georgia
San Francisco, CA
Hawaii, HI
Philadelphia, PA

and lots more cities too!
