Father's Day is June 17th

Did you know that the idea of Father's Day came about from a Mother's Day sermon? A woman by the name of Sonora Smart wanted her father to know how special he was to her and her siblings as he raised them all after their mother died while giving birth to her 6th child.

Sonora's father, William Jackson Smart, provided parental guidance in a courageous, selfless and loving manner. And since Sonora's father was born in June, the first Father's Day celebration was held in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge, supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law which finally made it permanent in 1972. While some countries celebrate Father's Day on different days, we all feel that fathers should be honoured with a special day.
